In May 2024 Â鶹ɫÇéƬ published new resources to support induction and leadership.

The resources were developed following the Messenger review (2022), which set out an ambition to review system wide leadership development. It was an opportunity to help the health and social care system strengthen leadership and management across both sectors in England. It was also a way to help people new to their roles to better understand what is expected of them.

Resources to support induction

The new induction toolkit has been created to help managers plan and deliver a supportive and inclusive induction for new starters at all levels across all types of roles in adult social care. It makes recommendations for managers around what to do before your new starter joins from on day one, into week one and over the following months with handy checklists.

The resources draw heavily on what providers across health and social care tell us works for them.

Coming soon: National induction programme for health and social care

Â鶹ɫÇéƬ is working with NHS England to create a new free-to-access national induction programme for health and social care. The programme is designed to support and equip new starters with a clear understanding of health and social care, helping to build a sense of belonging and support retention.

The induction programme is intended to be used alongside organisation specific induction and doesn’t replace or duplicate the Care CertificateManager Induction Standards or formal qualifications.

Future resources

In addition to publishing resources in support of entry-level induction, Â鶹ɫÇéƬ and NHS England is exploring:

  • a voluntary code of conduct for managers across health and social care, tailored to different levels of management
  • approaches and resources which embed equality, diversity and inclusion across health and social care.
